Nora Stratton was born and raised in a small town
outside of Munich Germany. While growing up in Europe, Nora found
the seeds of her artistic expression through museums visits in Munich,
inspired by late 19th / early 20th Century masters such as Ernst
Barlach, Auguste Rodin and particularly those of the Expressionist
movement “Der Blaue Reiter”.
Nora remained in Germany, completing her education with a degree
in Psychology and Fine Arts before arriving in the United States
in the Spring of 1997. After exploring various parts of the country,
she settled into the houseboat community of Sausalito late in that
same year where she remains today with her husband, Nathan, and
canine companion, Earp.
Nora continued her interest in Fine Art, studying drawing, photography
and sculpture at the College of Marin. Her continuation with photography
evolved as a way to be creative while representing the world ‘realistically’.
Sculpture, on the other hand, was a more abstract and hands-on process
for Nora, so much so that the two took hold as complimentary outlets
and thus are both represented here in this collective.
Of the images included in this show, they were created with either
a Pentax K1000 35mm or a Zeiss Ikon medium format camera, both used
to foster their older, manual mechanical processes as juxtaposed
against capturing a world now so technologically advanced in comparison.
The bronze sculptures were created using the traditional ‘lost wax’
technique, with a piece taking somewhere in the neighborhood of
2-3 months to complete. The extreme range of creation time existing
between photography and sculpture has always been a satisfying one
to Nora; another reason why she finds each so interesting.
Currently, Nora has begun to photograph commercially with various
projects ranging from product photography to location assignments
and amongst her various activities also currently works in a photography
studio in Sausalito. For any questions about Nora or her work, please
