Natural Things

Of all of the pleasures that everyday brings
Of all of the songs that accident sings
Of all of the reveries memory wrings
Nothing settles more lightly or comfortably clings
Than the unhurried beauty of natural things.

It was through my poetry that I came to sculpture (if what I do is really sculpture), that and a fascination with nature’s endless diversity. From this premise I progressed
from Sand Painting to Seaweed and Brush Sculptures, Lichen and Rock Sculptures, Driftwood, Garden Scrap, Seed Pod, Marble and Obsidian sculptures --- some with poetry attached, most without.

It is the harmony of disparate things, ordinary, everyday, natural things that I find fascinating. Many pieces just seem to fall together (not the seaweed sculptures, they provide challenges of a higher magnitude), for there is a deep underlying unity, connectedness, and beauty scattered recklessly throughout nature. After 37 years of houseboat living, weaving these diverse threads together has become for me, well, just
a natural thing.
